Untold Stories of Kanchipuram Silk Weavers | Netflix Pitch
I had an opportunity to pitch a documentary to Netflix, focusing on a side of Kanchipuram rarely seen—the untold struggles and lives of its silk weavers. While many films celebrate the silk, none reveal the weavers' stories. I aim to change that.
I envisioned the documentary to be simple yet multi-layered, telling a visual story with depth. On the surface, it appears as a montage of weavers and their looms, but with lighting and cinematography, the loom scenes are dark, while the weavers glow in golden light. Interviews are shot in their workspaces to capture the true ambient & atmosphere. I composed an intuitive score to enhance the experience.
Entire film was shot on a Blackmagic 8K cinema camera using only natural light, with no artificial lighting. Captured in Blackmagic RAW format, this approach allowed for extensive control over color and lighting, ensuring every shot was crafted with cinematic precision.
